(Yangon – 2nd August 2019) – The months of July and August are at hand, the months most conducive to planting young trees to regenerate the forest resources of Myanmar. As a responsible local telecommunications operator, MPT embarks on several CSR programs including nationwide tree planting activities, to improve the lives and conditions of the communities it works in.

Launched in the 2017, the MPT Green Movement envisions to plant thousands of trees not only in the capital city of Yangon, but nationwide. MPT, being the first and leading telecommunications operator in Myanmar with the widest coverage across the nation, is the only organization capable to undertake such massive and far-reaching environment campaign in the industry. In the past 2 years, the program has planted a total of over 10,000 trees by starting 2500 in 2017 and increased its scale to 8,200 by 2018. With this year targets to add around 7,000 more will bring the total trees planted to 17,700.

MPT continues its MPT Green Movement program for the 3rd straight year, in collaboration with its multi-sectoral partners; Local Social Organizations, the Myat Neikbban Tree Planting and Donation Group, the government sectors and various local communities including younger generations such as students from universities and schools. With its targets to distribute more than 7,000 seedlings to selected areas where those trees can grow sustainably, MPT believes that this could support the reduction of air pollution and build up the practices among the local communities for greening of Myanmar.

During this raining months of July and August, MPT offices at every states and regions shall conduct those tree planting activities where MPT employees, partners organizations and the public are ready to participate for such good practice of growing trees. Today as well at Yangon, Tanintharyi, Nay Pyi Taw, Kayah and Mon people showed their support the same time to replenishment of mother nature and there will be altogether 18 states and regional locations to let those tree saplings grow for long years which will be benefited to future Myanmar and its generations.

U Myint Thein Htun, Deputy Chief Operating Officer for MPT-KSGM Joint Operations expounds on the environmental impact of the MPT Green Movement: “Forest resources such as trees are depleting in a very fast way in Myanmar especially in last decades because of the development and other factors. MPT realizing that a healthy and safe environment, where people and industry can thrive together, is possible, has embarked on this Green Movement since 2017 as part of Myanmar in Our Heart initiative. With our 8,000-strong employees all over the country, our partner NGOs and the power of Myanmar youth, the program is on its way to achieve the targeted number of trees to replenish the country’s forest resources while there is still time. This is MPT’s way of contributing to sustainable development of Myanmar. ” He further continues: “I would like to encourage everyone, especially our youth, to take an active role for such tree planting activities and let us join hands in Moving Myanmar Forward.”

With over 70% tree survival rate track record through our first-hand information with regional team and Myat Neikbban, MPT hopes that these seedlings will grow to become sturdy trees in the next succeeding years to help lessen the impact of carbon emission brought about by increased car presence and factory emissions in the country. For its part, MPT also shoulders the costs and donates nursery plants of various species and types (such as teak, iron wood, neem, sal, kino, Indian almond and rain tree amongst others) including other necessary expenses, to ensure this program is sustained for the rest of this year’s rainy season.
